Senior Web Developer to Backoffice Product Team - Ruby/JS
Come join us in making Auctionet even better! Be a part of the development team at Auctionet that works to make "everyday antiques" and a sustainable lifestyle easily accessible for everyone.
Auctionet is a marketplace where auction houses from Sweden, the UK, Finland, Spain and Germany sell furniture, art, design items, collectibles and more.
We work in small, tight-knit product development teams. We are looking to expand the Backoffice team, responsible for the systems used daily by our 70+ auction houses to manage their sales.
We are looking for a developer...
- with a passion for software development
- with a curious mindset and who is open to learn and to share knowledge
- who wants to participate in making our workplace continuously better
- who has at least 3 years of professional web development experience
We also value if you have...
- an appreciation for automated testing and continuous deployment
- experience in Ruby/Rails or similar environments
- an interest in art, design or collectibles
The main mission of the Backoffice team is to build and improve our offering to our primary customers, the auction houses. Our customers rely on these systems for their daily work, and as such the team will have significant impact on their and Auctionet's success. The team also builds tools and systems for Auctionet's own employees, like the Customer Support team and the Finance and Payment teams.
A few examples of recent projects for the Backoffice team:
- Smart cataloguing backed by machine-learning algorithms
- Bank integrations to enable automatic cash management
- Customer identification tools to enable auction houses to be compliant with rules and regulations
We work on the full stack, without dedicated backend and frontend teams, though we do of course have different strengths.
Our main stack is Ruby on Rails, Turbo and Stimulus.
We’re into modern technology and agile methodology. We try new things constantly and keep the things we like – such as automated testing, retrospectives, code review, trunk-based development with continuous deployment, and DevOps. We've documented some of our practices in our devbook.
We are taking inspiration from Shape Up, alternating 4 weeks of planned work with 2 weeks of "cooldown" – tying up loose ends, doing maintenance, improving our tooling, trying out new languages or frameworks etc.
We work remotely or from our Stockholm or Malmö offices (and do remote pairing with great success). Our work hours are flexible, we don’t do overtime, we’ll pay your gym membership and you get time off to use it. You get six weeks of paid vacation. You get a work phone and the computer of your choice. Each year you get a generous budget and time allowance to attend conferences, participate in code retreats or courses.
We contribute to open source, release our own libraries and attend and arrange meetups.
In the interview process, we'll discuss some of your existing work, or a small take-home exercise, or we'll build a small feature inside our web app (if you're comfortable in Ruby on Rails). We don't do "gotcha" whiteboard interviews.
Please note we are only accepting candidates resident in Sweden at this time.
Auctionet was founded in 2011 by a team of people with unique experience of online auctions. Read more about Auctionet here.
In 2021 Auctionet acquired the auction house Stockholms Auktionsverk, and we are now by far the largest auction marketplace in the Nordics, and one of the larger auction marketplaces in the world. With this acquisition, Auctionet owns and operates both the oldest auction house in the world (1674) and the second oldest (1681), which means we have been working with sustainability for 350(!) years.
Workplace & Culture
We are a tight-knit, very international company and most of us have been in the auction business for several years. Most of the Swedish and many German auction houses are our partners and auction houses in the UK, Austria, Denmark and Finland are also live on Auctionet. Our HQ is located in central Stockholm, our logistics centre is in Malmö and our German subsidiary is operating from Hamburg.
If you are in the neighbourhood and want to talk auctions, please stop by for a coffee!
